After her mother’s death in 1981, a teenage girl learns to trust the intuition her mother once encouraged as grief strains the bond with her father and foreclosure threatens their family home. Film Synopsis
A Penny Made in Heaven is a heartfelt, character-driven film set in 1981. It follows Penny Martin, a perceptive teenage girl trying to find her footing after her mother’s death, as grief deepens the distance between her and her father. When Penny learns her family home is at risk of foreclosure due to medical debt, she begins searching for a way to save it. Along the way, she begins trusting the intuition her mother always encouraged — the quiet inner guidance we all possess — and discovers that it may be the very thing that helps her find a way forward. |
About the Film
At its core, A Penny Made in Heaven is about a daughter learning to trust herself in the wake of loss. It is a story of grief, family, kindness, community, and the enduring bond between mother and daughter.
Grounded and deeply human, the film presents intuition as a natural part of emotional life rather than something extraordinary or supernatural. It honors the quiet truth that sometimes we know or feel something before we can fully explain why.
Character-driven and emotionally intimate, A Penny Made in Heaven is ultimately a story about quiet courage, enduring love, and the ways kindness can ripple through a community — reminding us how deeply connected we are to one another and to those we love.

Creative Vision
The creative vision for A Penny Made in Heaven is rooted in a personal understanding of loss, caregiving, and the enduring bond between mother and daughter. While the film is not an adaptation of Wendy J. Menara’s memoir, it is autobiographical in spirit. Like Penny, Wendy lost her mother as a young girl, an experience that shaped much of her life and creative work.
The film grew from a desire to transform that understanding of grief into a tender, hopeful story — one that honors resilience, intuition, human connection, and the ways love continues to shape us after loss.
